Grasshopper vs OpenPhone

Comparing OpenPhone and Grasshopper:
Which VoIP phone system is right for you?

Ten or fifteen years ago, we didn’t dare imagine that we’d be living in the era of technology we’re living in now. We used landline phones to make simple calls, but now we can use not only cell phones but fancy VoIP systems. These systems are especially useful for companies that process a high volume of calls.

Choosing the right VoIP provider can make all the difference for your business. Grasshopper and OpenPhone offer powerful features, but which suits your needs? In this comparison review, we will break down pricing, features, and usability to help you decide.

Unlike Grasshopper, MightyCall offers CRM integration, on top of having other obvious advantages. If we’re comparing these three products (which we are), MightyCall has an upper hand in terms of business features.

Feature set: Which VoIP provider is better for your team?

It’s not impossible to go through every single feature each VoIP service has, but we’re not going to do that today. Otherwise, we’ll be here for quite some time. Instead, let’s have a closer look at their key functions and what makes them a strong candidate for your VoIP provider.

Grasshopper

Grasshopper offers around 15 to 20 features that are specifically aimed at building and improving business communications. What makes them stand out from other services?

  • Call forwarding
  • Voicemail transcription
  • Call analytics
  • Custom voicemail greetings
  • VoIP/Wi-Fi calling

Grasshopper is good for small businesses and solopreneurs.

OpenPhone

OpenPhone offers approximately 15 to 20 features designed for smooth business communications. What are the key features the service offers?

  • AI call summaries
  • Group calling
  • CRM integrations
  • Call recording and analytics
  • Call management
Winner: The tips scale in favour of OpenPhone. The difference between the two is not drastic, but still, there is some. While Grasshopper is good for small businesses and offers great features, it lacks basic CRM integration and AI functionality.

Pricing & plans: Does Grasshopper or OpenPhone have a more desirable price tag?

Both services offer tiered pricing, but their plans cater to different business needs. Below is a breakdown of their pricing structures.

Grasshopper OpenPhone
Lowest plan tier – price per month $18/user $19/user
Middle tier – price per month $32/team $33/user
Most expensive plan tier – price per month $70/team $47/user
Unlimited texting and minutes Yes Yes
Winner: Compared to Grasshopper, OpenPhone seems to be a bit more affordable. Additionally, it has CRM integration, which Grasshopper lacks.

Security, service reliability, and compliance: Which service provider is safer?

Let’s compare and see which service provides a safer environment for businesses.

Grasshopper

Grasshopper prioritizes customer data security through various measures. It is not HIPAA compliant because the support team needs to access account information for troubleshooting purposes. However, it does adhere to GDPR regulations, ensuring the protection of personal data for European customers. Additionally, Grasshopper has implemented STIR/SHAKEN protocols to combat caller ID spoofing and reduce spam calls, thereby increasing communication security.

OpenPhone

OpenPhone is not currently certified as HIPAA compliant. However, it does adhere to GDPR regulations, ensuring the protection and privacy of personal data for European customers. Regarding STIR/SHAKEN protocols, there is no publicly available information confirming OpenPhone’s implementation of these standards to combat caller ID spoofing and reduce spam calls. Users should contact OpenPhone directly for the most current details on their security measures and compliance status.

Winner: Compared to OpenPhone, Grasshopper seems to be a bit more open about its compliance adherence.

Integrations: Which platform supports more app connections?

Whether your business is big, small, or you’re working by yourself, you will need your VoIP system to be able to integrate with third-party apps. Let’s see what Grasshopper and OpenPhone have in that regard.

Grasshopper

Grasshopper vs OpenPhone has limited integrations, mainly working with Microsoft 365 and Google Voice. It lacks direct CRM and team collaboration integration tools, making it less flexible for businesses.

OpenPhone

OpenPhone offers more integrations, including HubSpot, Slack, Salesforce, and Zapier, allowing automation and better workflow management.

Winner: The difference between them is palpable. OpenPhone, for obvious reasons.

Customer support and satisfaction: Which company cares the most?

When it comes to customer support, both OpenPhone and Grasshopper seem to assist their users in any way they can. Let’s see what each service does to offer a great customer experience.

Grasshopper

Grasshopper offers 24/7 support through email and an AI virtual agent chat, ensuring that help is available at any time. To email them, you need to submit a form. Their support is accessible in multiple languages, including English, French, and Spanish. However, user reviews on G2 indicate some concerns, particularly regarding account management and customer service responsiveness.

The support function was a nightmare as was the signup process. They closed my account for non payment,.. then issued a blanket statement saying their policy doest allow for refunds of any kind, and finally the support function just goes in circles. It was really, really bad.

To sum up, here’s what we have for Grasshopper:

  • Support Channels: Offers 24/7/365 sales and support channels.
  • User Feedback: Some users have reported issues with customer service, including long wait times and account management challenges.
  • G2 Rating: Grasshopper has a rating of 3.9 out of 5 on G2.

OpenPhone

OpenPhone provides customer support through a digital assistant chat and email. If you want to email them, you need to submit a request form. They seem to have the same approach to support channels as Grasshopper. In terms of customer satisfaction, some users have reported occasional issues following software updates.

The only drawback I see with Open Phone is the lack of live customer support. They do have a quick turn around time when a ticket is submitted for tech support, but I could not get anyone on the phone or chat to solve the problem immediately.

To sum up, let’s see what we have for OpenPhone:

  • Support Channels: Provides support primarily through a digital assistant chat and email.
  • User Feedback: Users appreciate the platform’s ease of use and features.
  • G2 Rating: OpenPhone has a rating of 4.7 out of 5 on G2, indicating high customer satisfaction.
Winner: OpenPhone
Considering user feedback and ratings, OpenPhone, compared to Grasshopper, demonstrates a higher level of customer satisfaction, despite having pretty much the same customer support approach as Grasshopper.

Does OpenPhone or Grasshopper check all the boxes?

We’re almost there, bear with us for a few more minutes.

Grasshopper: Best for Simplicity

Grasshopper is a great fit for solopreneurs and small businesses that just need a straightforward virtual phone system. It’s easy to use, has simple pricing, and offers 24/7 phone support. However, if you’re looking for advanced features like call recording, analytics, or CRM integrations, Grasshopper might fall short.

OpenPhone: Best for Growing Teams

If you need more collaboration-friendly features, OpenPhone is the better option. It offers shared phone numbers, integrates with tools like HubSpot and Slack, and includes call recording. Its pricing is based on users, making it scalable for growing teams. However, it doesn’t have HIPAA compliance or 24/7 support, which could be deal-breakers for some businesses.

Winner: The difference between Grasshopper and OpenPhone is not that drastic. Grasshopper is great for simplicity, and OpenPhone is ideal for teams that need more integrations. But if you want the best of both worlds—strong features, affordable pricing, and great customer support—MightyCall is the top choice.
